Women's Detox Center

Every day across America, millions of women struggle with addiction. Some women have become dependent on prescription drugs. Other women, pressured by social expectations, peers, and "wine mom" culture, struggle with alcohol addiction. Past trauma, codependency, and issues in the workplace can all contribute to substance use issues. In addition, women can face different challenges in recovery than men do and can benefit from medical detox programs tailored to their specific needs. At San Antonio Recovery Center, we offer a women's detox center that offers a safe, supportive environment for the early days of recovery. If you or someone you love is struggling with addiction, we can help.

Do You Need a Women's Detox Center?

At San Antonio Recovery Center, we want women to succeed in overcoming their addictions and starting a sober life. The first step on the journey to recovery is detox, in which the body purges itself of any remaining addictive chemicals. During an addiction, the repeated or high-dosage abuse of a substance forces the body to adapt. During the addiction, this adaptation is expressed as tolerance, forcing women to use more and more often in order to achieve the same high. Dependence forms during this time as well, which means that the body and brain come to rely on the substance to function. When an individual decides to quit, however, that same physical dependence causes intense withdrawal symptoms. Alcohol and heroin withdrawal symptoms can be so severe that some women relapse in order to feel relief.

The pitfalls of withdrawal make a women's detox center a necessity. At San Antonio Recovery Center, our staff members monitor patients 24/7, eliminating the chance of relapse and ensuring someone is there in case of an emergency. Our team is also able to make withdrawal more comfortable. Some women may still be tempted to try and quit alone, but this is highly recommended against by doctors.

Common Withdrawal Symptoms

Detox will look different for every individual. The severity of an addiction, the individual's physical health, and other factors make this a highly individualized process. However, some withdrawal symptoms experienced during the detox process can include:

  • Fever
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Migraines
  • Insomnia
  • Fatigue
  • Seizures
  • Delirium tremens

The last two symptoms are particularly important. Without medical care, seizures can be fatal to the patient. Delirium tremens, a withdrawal symptom unique to alcohol, produces hallucinations and tremors. Delirium tremens, like seizures, can also cause complications. That's why doctors insist patients go through the detox process in a recovery center with medical support.

Residential Rehab at San Antonio Recovery Center

Detox is just the first step in the continuum of care. Firstly, many women will have post-acute withdrawal syndrome (PAWS). PAWS involves mental symptoms where other withdrawal symptoms were physical. Cravings, insomnia, mood changes, and other symptoms will continue for weeks, if not months after the patient finishes their initial withdrawal.

Many women also suffer from a co-occurring mental health issue. Even though detox helps the body end physical dependence, mental illness requires separate, subsequent treatment. Mental health issues and substance use disorders, when both are present, form a vicious feedback loop that can only be stopped if both disorders are treated. For women suffering from co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders, San Antonio Recovery Center offers dual diagnosis treatment. Without dual diagnosis treatment, relapse becomes far more likely.

In San Antonio Recovery Center's residential rehab program, patients live at the facility full time as they complete daily schedules of activities and therapy sessions. Patients with outside obligations like work and school have the option of the intensive outpatient program. Intensive outpatient treatment provides therapy and activities either as a day program or as a night program.

After patients leave a women's detox center and residential rehab, their recovery process isn't over. After residential treatment, we offer aftercare and alumni programs. Aftercare ensures that the gains made in rehab don't dissolve under the pressure of daily life. Alumni programs connect former rehab patients, allowing them to form support groups and encourage each other as they face challenges in recovery.
