This month, individuals and families across the country are taking time to celebrate National Recovery Month. Overcoming addiction and mental health issues can be challenging, but this month, we are all reminded that we are not alone. Many individuals who struggle with substance abuse or mental health issues will never seek treatment. Yet there are many opportunities to reach out for help and begin the journey to recovery.
Discover four ways you can participate in National Recovery Month, whether through sober activities or by taking the first steps toward recovery.
Every September, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) sponsors National Recovery Month. During this time, they run a campaign to raise awareness of the widespread impact of addiction and mental health issues on our nation, where to find help, and how to support those who are struggling. It is also a time to celebrate those who are in recovery.
Part of the goal of National Recovery Month is to help remove the stigma around substance abuse and mental health issues. There is no shame in seeking treatment. Rather, reaching out for help is an act of courage. Learn more about how to participate in National Recovery Month and contact an addiction recovery center near you today.
If you’ve had an experience with addiction or mental health issues, share your story with others. These issues can be isolating, and many individuals feel ashamed and have a hard time reaching out for help due to stigmas and negative stereotypes. Help to break down those barriers by sharing your story on social media, in a blog post, or at an event. You might inspire someone to take the first step toward recovery.
Contact your local elected officials and find out what initiatives and programs are in place to support addiction and mental health treatment. You can even ask them to sign a proclamation in support of National Recovery Month. This is another step you can take to reduce the stigma around addiction recovery.
If someone you love is struggling, National Recovery Month can be a conversation starter. Ask them if they’ve considered treatment, share your experiences, and tell them why this month is the perfect time to begin working toward a healthier life.
If they need a friend on their journey, offer to help in any way you can, whether that’s through providing transportation to outpatient treatment, connecting them with a 12-step program in your area, or by looking into treatment centers with them.
While the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way we interact, it’s still possible to put on an event celebrating and supporting National Recovery Month. Consider some of the following:
